2023 Diary - Page 33

20 June

It was thundering and raining hard when I first got up so my visit to the gym was postponed until I'd done the ironing. By then, the rain had eased off. It had freshened the air up a bit and put quite a bit of water into the water butts so happy all round.

I decided to go for a walk before going to the gym so went down to the River Cray and that area. The river was running really well with the extra rain water.

I popped into Priory Gardens on the return journey then finished my steps at the gym. A man was feeding the geese so they were all gathered around him, big and small.

Alicia messaged later in the day to say someone had taken their pet snake into PG. What a stupid thing to do with so many young birds around. He's been reported to the police and they are investigating.

Mum went to see Dad and he was well enough to play dominoes but getting tired by the time she went home.

I spent the afternoon in the garden. The mini rose that Jo gave me a while ago is in full bloom and looking lovely. It seems to like being in its pot outside.

I cut back yet more ivy and removed a lot of the moss on the path to my shed. I also cut the bracken / fern back that was starting to block the path to the veg beds. By the end of it all, I'd filled a couple of garden waste bags.

I promised Pauline that I'd take a paper copy of the floor plans for the flat when we meet on Thursday so she can deliver to Mum on Friday. I copied them both out and realised that I'd made the table too big on the plan I did yesterday so it was a useful exercise for that alone.

I sent a draft letter to Anika so she can give me the information I need to complete the application for matched funding at work for our open garden day. The charity, SiMBA, is only a small one so their finance person wasn't in the office today so we'll have to wait for a day or two. At least Carmen has confirmed I can have a desk tomorrow so I can go to work!

21 June

A quick trip to the gym before work. I spotted a few Morphs on the way into the office. This is the new trail to follow. I think it said there are 56 of them scattered all across London.

The new office fit-out is coming along nicely and looks really good. Very light, airy and spacious. As I was allowed in I could test different desks, the sound proff phone pod and one of the new meeting rooms with the higher chairs (a bit like bar stools with backs). All very impressive.

I met Jo and Gilda at Sadlers Wells after work. 42nd Street was really good. It was a smaller production than the one I saw in the West End a few years ago but they'd done it really well and we all enjoyed it. The leading lady was amazing.

The animals all seemed to be in a strange mood this morning. Vixen was chasing the squirrels around like a mad thing; Oli was flying around like a crazy cat and Whitelegs was being her usual self.

The timings of the classes didn't work for me this morning so I just did my own thing at the gym.

I met Pauline and Paul at Kings Cross station and we walked down to SohoPlace via The Brunswick Centre where we stopped for a drink.

fox

Gilda met us at the theatre and we all enjoyed "Brokeback Mountain". It was a very intense production, very well done.

Paul mentioned they'd been to the Barbara Hepworth museum recently so we walked down to John Lewis in Oxford Street where one of her sculptures sits on the wall.

We had drinkings at JLP while we were there then walked back to Kings Cross.

P&P hadn't been to the Regent Canal before and I'd already planned to have something to eat in that area so we went to Granary Square Brasserie. I had sea bream with various bits and bobs, Pauline had a Malaysian Monkfish dish and Paul had fish and chips. The food was delicious.

The sunset was lovely when I got back home. Jonathon had told me he'd not seen Oli for most of the day so I went round to Bob's to see if he was round there only to turn round and find Oli behind me!

There was a very high pitched squeal at Bob's and he didn't answer the door when I rang the bell. I asked Hilary to come over to make sure I wasn't imagining it and she confirmed the was definitely a squeal. I messaged him and tried to phone. Eventually I got through and Bob put my mind at rest that he was OK. Apparently he's been having problems with his garage door and that's what was making the noise. He couldn't hear it even with his hearing aids in but managed to stop it. I let Chris and Hilary know all OK, had a scruffle with Sylvia's dog then finally put my feet up.

23 June

I was the only person in the office today and I didn't have much to do but it did give me a chance to take a few photos before the others come back in next week. I booked a desk for Tuesday and a different one for Wednesday with no problem so I thought everything was going smoothly. Unfortunately some of my colleagues seemed to have more of a problem using the booking system but I'm sure it will settle down and people will get used to it.

I went for a lovely walk alongside the Thames and round St. Katharine Dock at lunchtime. The wildflowers in the moat of The Tower of London are looking really lovely.

I met Nicola for dinner at Sofra in St. Christopher's Place. She was on reasonable form and getting ready to head north for a couple of weeks.

24 June

I had nothing in my diary today - bliss!

I did three loads of washing before going to the gym so that's all caught up with. I had a good, varied session at the gym and came home feeling fully worked out.

On the way back from the gym Barbara and Mike invited me into their garden - it's lovely. They have a lot of Ox-Eye Daisies in their long grass and often have some in the wrong place so asked me if I'd like them - yes please!

Spent the afternoon in the garden - it was so warm and sticky it was like working in a sauna.

My main job for today was deadheading the large roses at the front. The ones I can reach with my secateurs are easy enough to do. The higher up ones have to be done with my ultra long cutters so my shoulders get some extra exercise.

The rose on the right is the one that Mum and Dad bought us for our house warming present in 2002. It's a "Simply the Best" and was the official rose of the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002. It is beautiful year after year.

I mowed the paths through the grass again - just to tidy them up then called it a day.

Gym this morning. I've decided that Shreena's classes are definitely too hard for me so I'll just do my own thing on a Sunday morning instead.

We had a celebration service at church - our Pre-School is 50 years old this year so it was a very upbeat, fun service with a lovely cake (I didn't get to taste the cake!)

cake

It was far too hot to do anything outside so we opened the windows and sat in the cool of the house.

Jonathon tried to do a tip run but the temporary site at Green Street Green was closed so he came back home again and will try Bromley later in the week.

Had a chat with Christine and a Skype call with Mum but neither of them had very much news.

I headed up a Knoll Active Walk in the evening - it was a bit cooler by then so quite pleasant for walking and I'd chosen a walk that included a lot of shade. We did the woodlands and alleyways walk with Tubbenden Meadows at the end.

I received a call during the walk from Doreen Kettlewell, one of Mum and Dad's friends. She had heard that Dad had died so I put her mind at rest and confirmed that one of us would let her know should anything happen to either Mum or Dad.

Ela's class was really hard, not least because the studio was far too hot. Janet and I were the only two from our "gang" that turned up and we both just about survived!

Jonathon did a tip run so that got rid of a load of garden rubbish bags.

Gilda came over and we went to Petts Wood for our walk today. The weather was much cooler so better for walking and it was really pleasant in the wood.

On the way home, we saw this gorgeous little foal and its mum in the field near the riding stables.

Jonathon joined us for lunch at A Mano, Gilda then went home and I spent a lot of the afternoon in the garden.

It looks like the ants have got the strawberries in the main beds becuase there wasn't a strawberry to be seen. I picked the rest of the gooseberries and we had those with our fruit for tea. The peas and broad beans are just about ready so i'm hoping we can have some for dinner on Thursday.

The hydrangeas are starting to show their colour and it looks like we'll have loads of flowers so it will have been worth waiting for their later than normal flowering. The lavender is also looking beautiful.

Pauline messaged to say that Mr. and Mrs Crow (purchasers of the bungalow) are not happy with the sun room. Not a big surprise but I'll still be disappointed if they chip the price too much. We can only wait and see what they say.

Gym then work (a normal start to a Tuesday).

There were quite a few people in the office and the new layout made it feel quite buzzy and busy which was great. So much better than when I had to sit on my own at one end of the room unless one of my colleagues were in. So far, I've only heard positive comments from the others so it seems that it's a success. The team breakfast that Dani arranged was vry welcome as well!

I met Mark at Thai Square for dinner and a catch up. Just as I was crossing Tower Bridge to go home, there was an announcement that it was going to be raised so I waited to watch it (and video it) because it's not something I see everyday.

No news from Yorkshire as to whether the Crows are intending to chip the price but the "Frank" mystery has been cleared up because Mum has heard that Frank Hullah has died so I think that's where the mistake has happened. I'm waiting until we know it's definitely true before updating Doreen.

28 June

Gym then work! There weren't as many people in the office today so not as buzzy but it meant I could I try one or two different places to sit, much to my boss's amusement when I pop up in different places on Webex calls.

One of our neighbours told me that they've got swifts nesting in their garden - great news as swifts are quite rare nowadays. We found this useful illustration on Facebook showing the difference between swifts, swallows etc.

birds

Oli has taken to napping on Jonathon's car - his latest favourite place. I spotted a couple of people photographing him so I invited them on to the drive to say hello to him - he lapped up the attention!

I cleaned the bird baths, topped up the bird feeders, watered the fruit, veg and pots and did some washing before watching a bit of TV.

Carole messaged to say that Dad was in good form today.

29 June

It was raining when I got up - hurrah! It has freshened everything up and the garden desperately needed the water so all good.

I went to early circuits today and enjoyed it - it made a change from my usual Thursday Tabata class and meant I had plenty of time to get my steps done on the treadmill without eating into too much of the day.

One of the routes to the gym was closed off by the police because two people were stabbed outside the Premier Inn last night. One of them is very poorly and two 17 year old females have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.

I spent the rest of the morning picking broad beans and peas then podding them. We had some for dinner - delicious! We also had the last of our Charlotte potatoes so I'll have to dig up some Roosters for tomorrow.

I spotted the heron strutting his stuff in our garden - he looked quite at home. Thankfully the net seems to save most of our fish from becoming a snack for him.

I had a frustrating afternoon. I had hoped to get my tax return done but I can't agree the information provided by Close Brothers. I phoned Alex, our fiancial adviser, to ask him to take up my questions with Close and try to find out what's going on.

Gilda and I went to Dartford theatre to see Titanic, the Musical in the evening. It was very well done and I'm glad I've seen it but I don't think I need to see it again (unless it comes to Bromley).

Mum messaged to say Dad was asleep most of the time today. Graeme and Anna were with her and Dad was aware they were there but was too tired to wake up for a chat.

I didn't wake up until 8 a.m. so felt behind all day! I did some household chores before heading out for a walk and the gym. I spent a bit of time in Priory Gardens - both in the park / pond area chatting to the waterbirds and in the gardens. The rose gardens are very pretty and the rest of the gardens are looking lovely and green.

By the time I got to the gym it was really quiet - very easy to do what I wanted to do and then leave.

PG

While I was doing that, Ginny came round to see Jonathon and get her iCloud storage sorted out - all done - and Carole was at Mum's installing her new broadband router - all done!

When I got home, I emptied the first of the potato grow sacks that have Roosters in them and got dinner ready - home grown beans, peas and potatoes with yummy sausages.

It was damper and cooler this afternoon but I still did a bit of gardening and Jonathon went off to Toulouse Lautrec for a photo shoot.

1 July

I popped to Sainsbury's to get some shopping. They had one of the mueslis I wanted but not the second one. I went to Tesco - they had the one Sainsbury's didn't have so all good in the end (first world problems!!)

Had a good run around in the gym then set the smoke alarm off when I sauted the potatoes for dinner - duh!

Thought the safest place for me for the afternoon would be in the garden so that's where I spent my time. I cut back the tamarisk and did some general tidying up. I think I know why we've not had any strawberries in the main beds this year - the new netting has such small squares, the pollinators haven't been able to get in. As I was taking the nets off today, a lot of bees came and told me off - one or two at a time. I apologised to them and promised it wouldn't happen again. I'll get nets with bigger holes for next year!

No church today so I took advantage of the lovely, sunny (but not too hot) weather and went for an early morning walk. I followed the circular route around Crofton Woods (other than when I veered off it because a path looked interesting). It was lovely and peaceful, hardly anyone else around other than the occasional dog walker.

I went to the gym to do some weights and cycling to finish off my exercise for the day.

I did a tiny bit of gardening in the afternoon - edged the grass, did the daily clearance of fallen apples from the pond netting etc. then had the usual Skype call with Mum.

We've agreed that Mum happy to move if the sale price for the bungalow stays as agreed but if the Crows try to chip then she'll stay put. The ball is, therefore, in their court.

Jonathon went to Croydon early to set up for a photo shoot of Sun Records, The Concert. He'd got me a ticket so I went at a more "normal" time to enjoy the show!

3 July

Started today with Ela's Monday class but didn't stay to do anything else in the gym because Blu-Lite, electricians, were due to arrive today to start the huge electrical programme. They were already here by the time I got home and, at one time, we had two transit vans, our two cars and two cars belonging to them on the drive. It's a good job Gilda was otherwise occupied today because I don't know where she would have been able to park.

Did a bit of tidying-up work in the garden and was pleased to see my first courgette of this year was ready. It was very tasty!

courgette

Jonathon and I um'd and ah'd about where to go for dinner and finally decided to go to A Mano.

Jo had Coco for a couple of days so we met them outside Sainsbury's and went for a walk (Jonathon went back home to look after Blu-Lite). Despite no rain forecast, we got a bit damp en route but there were trees to shelter underneath when the rain got really heavy. Surprisingly, Coco wasn't interested in going into the river at all today - no idea why.

river cray

On the way back we met three people from the South East Rivers Trust so had a chat with them about what they are intending to do to improve the River Cray. A lot of work has been done in recent times and the water flows much better now but there are, apparently, one or two spots that could be improved so we will watch with interest.

I finished cleaning the garden pots / seed trays and put those away then came inside for the rest of the evening.

4 July

The big news of today was that Mum decided she doesn't want to move after all so I had a chat with Pauline on my way back from the gym and she has spoken to the estate agents, solicitors etc and cancelled everything.

When I set off for the gym I noticed that the foxes had attacked Sheila's rubbish and managed to upend the wheely bin so there was stuff everywhere. I picked up what I could and stood the bin back up. When I got back home I got the dustpan and brush out and tidied up the rest - good job as there was some broken glass in that bit and I don't want Oli or the foxes cutting their paws.

Work was quite normal then I set off for Bromley to meet Gilda to see Anton and Giovanni in "Him and Me". They are dancers from Strictly Come Dancing, one of Gilda's favourite TV shows. The train I used to catch from Blackfriars to Bromley no longer runs so I knew I would have to get a train from Victoria. Easy on the District or Circle Lines as they are only a short walk from work but, unfortunately, when I got to the platform it was clear something was amiss. I trogged through the tunnels to the Central Line, changed at Oxford Circus for the Victoria Line and finally got a train. Thankfully it was a fast (and air-conditioned) train so I got there in time. The show was good fun so worth the palaver!

Mum messaged to say Dad was very poorly and depressed - hope it's just a bad day and that he perks up again soon.

5 July

Another gym and work day. I met my new boss, Stephanie, on-line (I'll meet her in person at the end of the month when she's in London).

I had a nice walk alongside the Thames at lunchtime (the rain had stopped by then)

I was due to meet Marcia and Karen at Bromley theatre to see The Drifters tonight so I decided to leave work a bit earlier and walk to Blackfriars to catch an early train so there was no risk of facing the same problems as yesterday. The show was fabulous (even if we did get told off for dancing in the aisles!). Karen was driving so I even got a lift home.

Carole visited Dad but he was busy having his hair cut and Roger Bailey (from Whixley) was there visiting as well so she left them to it. Clearly he's a lot better than he was yesterday.

6 July

I went to early circuits - I prefer it to Tabata but it starts at 6.45 a.m. so if I've been out late the night before it could be a problem to get up for it!

My health assessment with Ela went really well - everything was going in the right direction and I am no longer technically obese (cat. 2) but "standard" (cat 5) - a real improvement so I'm very happy.

By the time I got home, it was a bit like Piccadilly Circus!

Loretta was here to do Jonathon's feet and the electricians were back on site. They focused on the garage today - no idea what they were doing but there seemed to be lots of cables being sorted out.

electics

Jen (Knoll resident) and her other half came to collect our platform ladder so they could finish cutting their hedge. They'll return it within a few days but not quite sure when yet.

Teresa came soon after that to do the cleaning - she had a dentist appointment in the afternoon so came early.

I phoned the NFU to cash in Dad's final ISA with them to give us some leeway in selling the three-cornered field (we have to do that now that Mum's decided not to move). They were really helpful and it seems to be a better way of communicating with them than by post - that can take an age.

lavender

I spent some time in the garden (the lavender is looking really good this year) and picked some broad beans and peas for dinner (we had dinner in the evening because the house was too busy at lunch time!)

I gave Teresa some potatoes to take home with the warning that Roosters are better cooked in something other than water - they break up if boiled.

hair

I decided it was time to get my hair cut so went to the High Street. Marble Hair is now called Breezes. I found out my hairdresser is from Turkey but I still don't know her name! Her English (or confidence speaking English) was much stronger than my last visit. I'm sure my hair gets cut shorter every time.

As it was such a lovely afternoon, I called Jonathon and we met at The Orpington for a drink and ice cream before popping to the YMCA to get some books and Dyas for a new toaster.

We had a lovely, peaceful tea outside (and Oli relaxed) then caught up with some television.

Oli

7 July

Dropped our old toaster round to Priyanka on the way to the gym. Only two of the slots have been working for quite a while hence buying a new one yesterday. Rather than throw it out, I asked if anyone wanted it on Knoll Sharing WhatsApp group and Pri said yes almost straight away because it's better than the one slot that's working on hers!

The new yoga lessons started at the gym today. Our teacher (or Yogi) is Kevin. He is an amazing teacher - a bit bear of a man who plays in a heavy rock group but loves yoga. His style of yoga is different to any I've come across before but it was good fun.

Carole phoned to discuss Mum, Dad, Pauline etc. She was going to Frank Hullah's funeral so we agreed what she should say to Dean if he raised the question of the three-cornered field. We also chatted about getting a gardener for Mum amongst other things.

Crystal Palace lakes

Jo and I met at the station and headed off to Crystal Palace Park for a walk. It was a really hot day so we took it at a very steady pace. One of the reasons for going there was to see the new "dinosaur" that had recently been introduced (and say hello to the others (of course).

We had a good walk around then had lunch in the cafe there - very tasty but the portions were far too big for such a hot day.

During our walk around we came across a maze. We have been there loads of times before and didn't even know there was a maze. We had a wander round that and managed not to get lost!

Will came while I was out so our windows are nice and clean again.

Leo (Jen's husband) returned the ladders. They had worked well so their hedge is now trimmed and tidy again.

While I was watering the pots, I noticed the ants had started to fly. It usually happens in July but, from memory, later. Apparently it's supposed to be a bumper year for them and there were certainly plenty in the garden.

Jonathon went to Toulouse Lautrec to do a photo shoot while I watered the garden and did my tax return. Unsurprisingly, I owe them some money and I can't claim my refund for last year until the middle of next week so I've made a diary note.

8 July

I stepped outside the front door to go to the gym to discover that the newsletters had been put there so I delivered those first.

Did my stuff in the gym then home. I couldn't help but be impressed by a squirrel. He knew that there was a tiny bit of fat candle left on the "plastic stalk" but he couldn't get it while it was in the feeder so he pulled it out then held it in his front paws while he finished it off. Very clever!

We had courgettes with our dinner - Jonathon actually got some this time!

A rainy start to the afternoon encouraged me to start the jigsaw that Pauline had posted down. It was at Mum's and on the "throw out" pile. The centre of the puzzle is the farm at Whixley and it made me realise how much I'd forgotten about the immediate area around it!

The rain stopped in time for this afternoon's walk so I met Michael at Tesco and off we went. We were originally going to go to Chelsfield Lakes but the weather was really sticky and rain threatened so we went to Goddington Park and Lilly's Wood instead. We were treated to an surprise Spitfire aerobatics display - it was Chelsfield Fair. It was very impressive when it was turning upside down etc. and really good to see. The rain started again after I got home.

Jonathon had gone out by the time I got home. I finished the jigsaw and watch TV before bed.

KRA was short of people to deliver newsletters so I offered to do another couple of roads, not realising how many houses there were! 89 newsletters, 4 km and 14 "elevations" later (loads of steps up to front doors!) I finally got them all delivered. I definitely won't be offering to do that one regularly.

As a result, my time in the gym was limited but I got a bit done so better than nothing.

Church was fun. Charlotte was leading the service with the children and it was all about Acceptance. We had crafts to do as well as other bits of "audience participation" - the hour went very quickly.

We went to Orpington GPO for Sunday dinner expecting to have roast chicken (me) or beef (Jonathon) but they had a wider selection today so I had a salad and J had a brie and bacon toasted sandwich. All quite tasty and the portions were nowhere near as enormous as the roast dinners.

Had the usual Skype call with Mum. She seems a lot happier now she's made her decision to stay put.

Jonathon went to London early today because the concert started earlier than normal and he wanted to be there for the set up etc.

Lisa was the only person who joined me on the Knoll Walk today. She popped round a bit earlier as we were both ready and we went round Crofton Woods Circular - it was the best part of the day - perfect weather for walking.

Had a long chat with Christine so we've finally caught up with each other's news.

Did Ela's circuits class then straight back home because the electricians were back.

Gilda came and we walked to and round Jubilee Park before joining Jonathon at Aqua Bar and Grill in Petts Wood for lunch. I thought we should try somewhere different so asked the Knoll ChitChat group for recommendations and this was one of them. Definitely one to go to again - the food was delicious and the service very friendly and efficient.

I popped some stuff to Oxfam, went to Sainsbury's, got Kyron's birthday voucher from The Entertainer and picked up some bits from Boots - a tour of our High Street!

Oli supervised me while I did a tiny bit of gardening in the evening before we settled down to watch some TV.

Gym then work. I seemed to spend most of this afternoon on Webex calls so my ears had had enough by the end of the day. I signed my extension contract so I'm now at pbb until the end of September.

Met Mark at Granary Square Brasserie and had yummy dinner. This time I had slow roast aubergine with lots of bits and bobs.

Blu-Lite came and finished the last remaining job so I think we're all done on that front for now.

Pauline had a really good visit with Dad.

Gym then work. I noticed the Catalpa tree was starting to flower - very pretty it looks too.

I chose a different desk today at work - I quite like this hot-desking malarkey where I can decide where to sit and book a desk a week in advance. Today's was a window seat, facing the opposite way to the way I usually sit so made a nice change.

Gilda and I ventured up to Wembley in the evening to see "Newsies" - it was brilliant. Easily one of the best musicals I've seen in a long time.

Jonathon appears to have made significant progress with EDF regarding the new meters - let's see if they now do what they say they will in August (2 dates).

Mum went to see Dad who was on good form. Falmingos won the pub quiz - I'm sure they do better without me!

13 July

Despite not getting home until late last night, I was awake in time to go to early circuits - I definitely prefer it to the 9 a.m. class. Walked it out on the treadmill then home.

Lots of jobs to do so caught up with those. One of the jobs was to contact HMRC to try and claim a refund for the 2022 Close Brothers error. I discovered I had to write to them so letter duly drafted. I can't post it Recorded Delivery in Orpington because there are building works at the back of the Post Office (I don't really understand why that should make a difference) so I'll post it next week when I'm back in the office.

We had the last of our garden peas for this season for dinner. Saw this lovely moth in the kitchen - not sure what it was doing there but it seemed happy enough.

Blu-Lite came to sort out a minor problem in my bathroom (took them about 5 minutes) and Teresa came to do the cleaning.

We've started Park Watch (formerly known as Swan Watch but we have no swans now) so did a stint at Priory Gardens for an hour with my litter picker. I had a chat with a few of the people in the park and was very ably helped in my litter pick by a young girl called Ella (with her Mum's permission). She was very keen to help!

Jonathon had gone out by the time I got back and I was invited to Jo's for a cuppa with her and a couple of other people who live in her block (Xinming and Jo).

14 July

Started today with Yoga. Jo invited Indra and me over to her flat for orange juice and to see if we could see the Peregrine Falcons that have a nest in the tower at the college. The view from her flat is one of the best but, unfortunately, they weren't there this morning. Jo mnetioned that Xinming has asked her to cat sit for the next few days - not sure Jo is too impressed with the idea but she'll do it this one time.

I went back to the gym to do most of my steps for the day (it was a damp day so didn't fancy going for a walk).

Today's most important job was talking to Dean to let him know that we will be selling the three-cornered field. As usual, he was very accommodating and says he'll work with us so we just need to keep him informed. I also let Katherine know so she heard it from me rather than on the grapevine. Alice at Stephensons wasn't in the office today so I've emailed and asked her to start the ball rolling next week.

I dug up the next lot of potatoes - Duke of York this time. One of the bags didn't look too healthy so I did that one and was pleasantly surprised as to how many potatoes there were. We'll have some for dinner on Sunday. I cleared yet more fallen apples from the pond netting.

We both went to Tesco to stock up on meat for the freezer then stayed in for the rest of the day.

15 July

Just did weights at the gym this morning because we were scheduled to go on a long walk to and around High Elms. Unfortunately, Kirsty, the walk leader, called off sick so Michael and I did our own thing and tested out the walk for tomorrow. There was very little mud despite the rain from yesterday so it seems fine. I swapped a bit round leaving Tugmutton Common and going back to the woods so it was a useful dry run (and Michael didn't mind being a guinea pig). We got a bit wet half way round but the wind soon dried us and our clothes. The tree in the middle photo reminds me of a giraffe!

As it was a shorter walk, I was home for lunchtime (the idea had been to have lunch at High Elms). Jonathon and I decided to go to Xi'an in the High Street. The food was delicious so definitely a good idea.

I spent most of the afternoon tidying up the front garden, which was fun in the strong winds, but I think I managed to collect all my prunings rather than let them fly around the street!

Surprisingly, Jonathon was at home - very unusual for a Saturday night - so we caught up with some more TV.

16 July

Usual Sunday morning - gym then church.

No gardening today - far too windy. Just as bad, if not even worse, than yesterday. Had a walk around and we don't seem to have suffered too much damage: the odd broken branch that I'll need to sort out on a less windy day but that's about it.

Jonathon went off to Kings Road, Chelsea to do his photo shoot for today.

I had the usual Skype with Mum. She'd found her new balance class hard on Thursday but will persevere in the hope that it improves her stability.

Led a Knoll Active walk and was pleased that there were 8 of us plus Coco - the most I've had on one of my walks.

Phoned Christine and caught up with her news. They'd had a terrible storm yesterday but the road in front of the farm hadn't flooded so the water must have run off successfully.

17 July

Circuits to start the day.

Gilda came and we ventured off to Hayes on the 353 bus. We weren't intending to stay on the bus that far but were glad we did becasuse the road where we were originally thinking of getting off wasn't very pedestrian friendly.

We visited four parks / gardens in total - all new to Gilda and two of them new to me.

The first was Husseywell Park where we saw these two terrapin - presumably dumped at some point but I don't know for sure.

Next stop was Old Rectory Gardens (we were still in Hayes at this point). Just as we were about to leave Husseywell, the heavens opened and we tried to shelter under a tree, with some success. It meant there were quite a lot of puddles for us to navigate around.

We arrived at Norman Park via the horse fields - lots of lovely animals for us to admire. There were also lots of thistles, some stil purple and lot that had "blown" - they looked very pretty with the raindrops on them.

Our final park was Church Gardens in Bromley. These are close to the theatre and I was surprised Gilda hadn't been there before. The route between Norman Park and Bromley Town Centre isn't particuarly pretty so we jumped on a bus!

We met Jonathon at Etna for lunch. Etna was Studio Gusto until two weeks ago! The food was just as good so I dare say we'll go back again. The reason we went to Bromley (other than for a change of scenery) was that J had to take his ID docs into the building society for an account we are opening.

Jonathon and I had our annual financial review with Alex this afternoon. We are still solvent but the stock markets aren't doing much at all so there's no spectacular increase in our investments.

Alice from Stephensons emailed. She hadn't got time to go to the field to do the photos this week so will do them next week and send draft sales particulars through for our approval.

Jonathon went off to London to do a photo shoot. I watered the pots and flopped in front of the TV.

That's it for this page so onto the next ...
