Our Garden - June 2017

courgette

Starting with the food beds this month, the courgettes are thriving and we had the first courgette for lunch today (11 June).

There are runner beans from Carole in the sack a the far end (an old rubbish sack that's lost its handles - they serve really well as grow sacks becuase they hold their shape).

greenhouse

One of our neighbours gave us some tomato plants - with the greenhouse already full of tomatoes, these are hiding in pots behind the courgettes above right.

brassicas

The brassicas are surviving under their nets - hopefully they won't get attacked by birds, bugs or slugs!

broad bean

The broad beans have done really well and we've enjoyed eating the. We had more today for lunch and there are already some in the freezer.

toms

The tomatoes are on their way.

onion

The onions are better this year.

peas

Really looking forward to eating these peas.

carrot

Carrots netted against carrot fly (fingers crossed).

potato

This photo is for Dad - our main crop potatoes are already in flower!

If I ever had to choose between growing food or flowers, I'd choose food every time. There's nothing better than picking / digging up food from the garden and eating it straight away. So fresh and as we are chemical free, we know there's no nasties involved.

rasps

Autumn raspberries coming along nicely

strawberry

We've already enjoyed eating a whole load of strawberries. We grow some in sacks and some in the ground. Both have done well this year.

allium

Now for the rest of the garden.

Some of the allium are still flowering but most are past their best.

sys

The grass beds are putting on a good show. Oli (cat) particularly likes this grass bed so it's flattened a bit in the middle!

rose

The roses are in full bloom. The yellow roses at the front have had their first flush and we're hoping they'll flower again (they do some times).

cal poppy

You might notice that something is missing from the pigs' bed. The bird feeder is now on the patio in a stand until we decide what to do with it. The birds (and squirrels) seem quite happy where it is so perhaps we'll just leave it there.

rose

This rose is in the vegetable / fruit beds because that's where it was before we made that bed a food bed. I expect we'll have more of the same happeningas the food takes over more space!

hebe

The hebes seem to be doing well. These blue ones are underneath the roses that are starting to cover the arch. The white ones are much bigger and are on either side of the path on the right hand side of the garden.

I'm still not sure that this is called but think it's lysimachia. Either way, it's spreading nicely.

rose

Our house warming present from mum and dad all those years ago - it's thriving.

nigella

These pretty love-in-a-mist self seeds here, there and everywhere.

nigella

This white love-in-a-mist has been grown from seed from one that was also grown from seed that Janet gave us last year.

hydra

The hydrangeas in the pots are doing OK but the main plants in the beds were badly wind damaged. I've cut them right back and they are leafing up again so hopefully they'll recover.

rose

The roses are slowly covering the arch.

lavender

shed

I still have quite a few plants in the greenhouse. The larger ones above are nicotiana (also from seeds from Janet one year on). The smaller ones are wallflowers ready to plant here and Yorkshire later in the Summer.

I love lavender and we have it all around the garden with plenty in both the ground and in pots in the gravel area.

rose

They say a sign of middle age is prefering foliage to flowers. Guess I must be middle aged then because I love to see the different colours and textures of the leaves.

sweet peas

Lovely, lovely sweet peas. Every year I seem to grow more of these. I love the smell of them.

clematis

We have a few clematis in pots outside the dining room window to mask the water butts.

bush

No idea what this bush is called but it seems to be flowering this year.

carnation

Another lovely donation from Janet a few years ago and growing well.

Self seeded poppies are always welcome here.

The pond is one of Oli's favourite places. The nets were put on to deter the heron but apparently the frames are a really good way to get to the fountain so Oli can sit on it and watch the fish. I don't think he's caught one yet!
