Our Garden - May 2014 |
We're heading to the end of May and it was time to go out with the camera again. We'll start in the front garden with the roses that scramble all over the front of our house. Photos from earlier this month are lower down the page. |
The Broad beans are full of promise - lots of flowers should mean lots of beans. The main crop potatoes (left) are coming along well. |
Strawberries - the taste of Summer isn't far away. They are hiding under the net in the photo below. |
If you look closely you can see the leeks at the front of the photo on the left. |
The pond irises are just coming into flower. |
The Pyracantha bushes are full of flowers so there should be plenty of berries for the birds later on. |
These Alstromaeria are taking over the front garden. |
I love the leaves of Achilla Mollis (Lady's Mantle) but I'm not too keen on the flowers so, for me, this is them at their best. |
This weigelia is full of flowers this year. |
Snow in Summer - so pretty. |
These Acquilegia are in the front garden and self seeding around. |
This Azalea was hiding in the silver bed. I've trimmed the "Bride" bush today so you can see it more easily now. |
One of the Cistus is quite old (was here when we arrived), the other is one I grew from seed. Both are lovely. |
The plants in the pots (left) are waiting to be planted out. The forget me nots in that bed have all gone now as I pulled them out after I'd taken the photos. |
The California Poppies close up at night and then open to soak up the sun during the day. |
This grass bed has survived a lot better than the other. Hard to believe they were planted in an identical manner at the outset. |
The Red Robin is still full of flowers. |
I'm delighted to report that the Eucalyptus seems to have survived its trauma. You might remember that it was blown over in the gales we had earlier in the year. We gave it a hard prune and propped it back up and it's now got lots of leaves peeping out. |
Geraniums - lovely ground cover plants. |
The Lilac smells lovely when you walk past it. |
Some people say that May is between seasons. I don't agree, I think it's a lovely time of year in the garden. There's so much already in flower and so much promising to bloom very soon. |
That's it for this tour around. The following photos were taken from the first May bank holiday. We'll start in the front garden this month and the yellow roses are in full bloom. |
The red roses are just starting to show but are a long way behind the yellow ones (as normal). The quince are also flowering nicely.
The Clematis and Aquilegia above are such a pretty pink colour and the alstromaeria Orange Glory are just starting to flower. They didn't really die back this winter so are trying to take over the whole bed. That's it for the front, we'll now stroll around the back garden. |
It was such a mild winter that some of last year's bedding, that I'd missed when I was clearing it,
has flowered all over again. |
Spring is such a wonderful season. Everything's coming back to life, looking so fresh and new. |
The irises are starting to flower. If you look closely at the photo on the right, you can see Jonathon with his camera as well. |
Just in case you thought we'd gone primarily white, there are other colours as well. The Tamarisk is particularly lovely this year. |
Lovely pastel colours give your eyes a rest when you've been enjoying the brighter colours. |
The Lilac's putting on a really good show. |
This Acer seems to be spreading ever wider. It's what I spent my leaving present money on when I left HSBC. |
These tulips look lovely with the light shining through them. |
The Forget-me-nots are still putting on a good show and the Veronica (left) is probably the best it's ever been. |
The California Poppies are starting to put on their annual show. |
Our Snow in Summer is doing its usual thing. Helen tells me her visiting rabbits put paid to hers! |
We should really cut the grass before I take photos! |
This Red Robin Photinia is flowering beautifully. |
The Cotinus glows wonderfully at this time of year. |
I like it when Janet has a clear out - I brought the two obelisks home from her house after one visit and the sweet peas are already scrambling their way up them. |
This Azalea is spreading well without growing too tall. |
Self seeded plants are often lovely so I try to let them grow and see how they turn out (unless they're obviously weeds then they have to come out). |
The early potatoes on the right are thriving as are the peas and broad beans. |
The main crop potatoes, planted on Good Friday so a few weeks later than the earlies, are just peeping through but there are a lot of flowers on the strawberries (behind the potatoes). That's it for this visit. |
