Our Home - 2009 News

We had the outside of the house painted again this year as it was starting to look a bit grubby again. At the same time, and while we had the scaffolding up, we finally had the two small stained glass windows replaced.

Having done that, Terry then quoted to do my bedroom and started almost straightaway! It hadn't had anything done to it since we moved in because I liked the yellow colour and I was constantly debating whether or not I needed to put an en suite in. In the end, I decided I didn't need / want one so settled on having the vanity unit ripped out, some new wardrobes and a lick of paint.

As always it wasn't that straight forward - floor boards and skirting needed replacing, as did one of the radiators (the other was removed altogether). This is what we started with.

As they always say, it has to get worse before it can get better so everything was ripped apart. The furniture that could be moved into the back bedroom was and I was moved into the front guest room. The first I knew about it all was the night before we were due to go away for 2 weeks to South Africa so that was a fun evening clearing a whole bedroom!

The new colour is a bit warmer than the yellow that was there before. It's called Soft Sun by Dulux. The woodwork is white. My bedroom faces west and has lovely big windows so it's really nice and light.

The bracket on the wall is for my new television. My old one is 25 years old and still works fine but is not capable of being digitalised so is having to be replaced. I'll really miss it as it's been with me all the time I've lived in the South of England (it's now in the kitchen so I didn't have to throw it away!)

My old television was bought it in 1984 when I first moved to London but it's not digital compatible so it wouldn't work on switch over. The new one (Samsung) will hang on the wall rather than take up shelf space.

The carpet is a brown colour called Caribou. It's made by Ulster and is in their York Wilton range. As usual, we got the carpet from K2 Flooring. I was tempted to go for cream but I didn't think I'd be able to keep it clean so went for a darker brown instead.

The wardrobes are Ercol and we ordered them from Thornburrows in our high street.

As usual, we ordered the blinds from Hilary's Blinds. The curtains were ordered from Amity in the high street.

I decided the lamp shade in Jonathon's bedroom would look much better in mine so it was relocated and my existing bedside lamp works a treat.

We also had a new fire fitted in the front sitting room because we liked the others so much! It's really nice to be able to light a log fire to take the chill off.

That's it for 2009.
