Botlierskop 2010

We said we'd come back to Botlierskop but didn't expect it to be quite so soon. Still, I had to celebrate reaching my half century somehow so what better way than seeing animals and being spolit!

After a 22 hour journey (door to door), we began to enjoy the animals and relaxation. A typical day starts with a game drive at 6.30 a.m. followed by breakfast then a rest until high tea with the elephants (you can have lunch but we can't quite manage to eat that much food!). Another game drive is followed by a visit to the lions and then dinner. There's a river trip included in the stay and you can swap a game drive for a helicopter flip, a horse ride or even an elephant ride but we prefer to be out in the trucks to see what we can spot / photograph.

We also went off with Stuart and Lindi to Jukani for an afternoon (click here for photos). Jukani is a wildlife predator park and certainly has some impressive animals but they are all in cages (look happy and healthy though).

Day break can be spectacular or very cloudy or very wet - we had all of them - and the weather can be changeable so layers are required (as with most of our holidays!)

There's always plenty to see on the game drives - you never quite know what until you've done it. You get up very early and the spectacular day break just about makes up for the early alarm call!

We didn't see all the animals on every game drive - the photos reflect what we saw over a number of days with at least one game drive per day.

I'm not writing lots of words this time as I did that last year when we were here so if you want the story of the lions or the elephants etc., please check out last year's page.

Two very welcome additions to Botlierskop this year were the Spa (for Shirley) and the bird feeders (so Jonathon could get close to some of the birds).

The Bombardier plant usually looks like the picture on the left. A shower of rain helps it to start flowering and when it's in full flower the farmers know the grass has enough nutrients in it to bring the animals in to feed.

Would we come back again - of course. We need to start planning our next visit as soon as possible!
