Tenerife August/September 2024 |
Jonathon's birthday holiday this year - Riu Palace, Costa Adeje, Tenerife. We'd not been there before even though we'd visited some of the other Canary Islands so it seemed only right to go to Tenerife this time. |
Unfortunately the flight was delayed by a few hours so we had a long time to kill in Gatwick. Lunch filled most of it, especially with an extra coffee. The flight was uneventful (perfect) and we arrived in Tenerife South, tired but there. Our next long wait was for a family who seemed to be incapable of finding the transfer bus. We eventually set off for the hotel only to find when we got to the Riu Palace (our hotel, the last drop off) that the same family had not got off the bus at their hotel so the poor driver was going to have to reverse his route and get them there. By the time we had checked in it was well after midnight. We quickly unpacked and fell into bed - the rest had to wait until tomorrow. When I opened the curtains the following day (Saturday), the view was lovely. Our hotel is on the outskirts of Adeje, on the La Caleta side. A lovely position. |
Breakfast was up to Riu's usual standards, if not slightly better so we enjoyed that then, after the food had settled and I'd done a crossword or two, we went to see Aimee, our holiday rep for this week. She was lovely and really helpful. She even reminded us that we are half board rather than B&B this week so that was a nice surprise! The hotel gave Jonathon a bottle of bubbly for his birthday but, as we don't drink it, he took it to Aimee when he booked a trip for later in the holiday. |
A little while later, I took myself off for a walk. The sand outside our hotel is very black but just down the road in the Adeje direction it was more sandy colour and on the La Caleta side it's more like fine black grit - very volcanic. |
One of my aims was to try and find a restaurant that Jonathon had seen recommended before we came and the second was to try and find an ice cream parlour (or similar). Restaurant was duly located but I think it's a bit too far, up and down hills, for Jonathon to get there and back comfortably so that's a no. I couldn't find any really good looking ice cream so that's a hunt for tomorrow. |
The coast line reflects the volcanic nature of the island and is quite dramatic - very rocky and looks quite pre-historic. There were a few interesting pieces of sculpture as I wandered about and, of course, beautiful, brightly coloured flowers. |
On the La Caleta side, there were some interesting chimneys - they looked like dove cotes and I'd seen a few collared doves around. Whether that's what they are or not, I'm not sure but it's a nice thought. After the desert-like rocks and beaches, it was good to get back to the greenery of the hotel gardens. |
We decided to have dinner at the hotel (as we'd paid for it apparently). The food selection was really good and Jonathon particularly enjoyed his variety of puddings. The sun was starting to set as we went back to our room and that was the end of the first full day of this holiday. |
Sunday arrived and I felt like I'd recovered from our long travelling day on Friday so up and out to see if I could get far enough along the coast to see the sunrise, taking photos along the way. |
I did see the sunrise, after walking quite a way along the coast and up a steep hill only to find the view would have been just as good, if not better, from a spot only 10 minutes from our hotel. You live and learn! |
As usual, there are a few cats here and there. This one looked really comfy sprawled out on the palm leaves. I popped to get some treats from the local supermarket and then burned some calories off in the gym before showing Jonathon the ice cream parlours (yes, I found two) and the local view point. Gelato Fortuna is now our favourite for this holiday. We found our first wildlife as we walked along - I was beginning to wonder if there were any animals other than cats and dogs here. |
All too soon, day two came to a close. |
Monday and I turned right instead of left out of the hotel because I decided to visit La Caleta for my early morning walk. Big excitement for me on the way there because I spotted a hedgehog. It was moving far too fast to get a decent photo and I've no idea how it survives in such a hot, dry place but I was really pleased to see it. I think it was probably scurrying home to the den before sun up. |
La Caletta was a pretty place with a blend of older and newer properties and they appear to have made a good go at building the new properties in a sympathetic way so it all sits together nicely. There was also a fair bit of greenery and planting around to brighten it up. |
I really liked the different coloured chairs in this cafe. It wasn't open when I was there (far too early) so I couldn't stay. I wanted to visit the nature reserve and that meant climbing a lot of steps. The photo was taken part way up and I stopped counting once I'd reached 100! The climb was well worth the effort. |
The sunrise was amazing - I was above the roof tops with a clear view. |
The path in the nature reserve was pretty rough shale but it was easy to follow and it was a lovely, rocky place to walk around with lovely views of the coast. |
I came across this sculpture on the way home. It was amongst the rock towers. I'm not sure what it represents but thought it was worth a photo. |
I popped to the shop for some milk and spotted Jonathon totally engrossed in his book on our balcony on the way back. Or ... perhaps not as engrossed as I thought because he took a photo of me coming back! |
We went for our gelato in the afternoon (45 minutes walk each way) but had a quick detour so Jonathon could see the rock towers for himself. Just to prove I take afternoon photos as well, here's one of the sparkly sea as we walked back to the hotel. |
We'd booked an excursion for today so no early morning walk and no gym because we had to be at the pick up point before 8.30 a.m. and didn't get back until about 4 pm. It was a great day with our first stop being Masca, a tiny village in the middle of nowhere. It has no doctor, pharmacy, school or anything much apart from a couple of cafe / restaurants for the visitors so it wouldn't do for me! |
The roads were really bendy and twisty but Jose, our guide and driver, clearly knew what he was doing even if some of the tourists in their rental cars didn't. I don't think he was impressed with most of them at all. On the way to Tiede National Park, Jose explained how important pine trees are to Tenerife because of the way the preserve water and create mini reservoirs - vital for the people who live and work on the island. |
Infra red pine trees! |
The first part of the park we visited was pretty much as we expected, having visited other volcanic areas around the world. Lots of solid lava looking very sharp and menacing and definitely not for walking on. The following stop was quite amazing. it was like nothing either of us had ever seen before - like the surface of the Moon apparently. |
The information board told us that when the Apollo craft landed, they found landscapes similar to this, craters with gentle walls covered in very slippery volcanic dust. This area is used to test prototypes ofvehicles and instruments that are used to explore the Moon. Similarly, when torrents of water form in arid landscapes, such as this, they usually leave a mark in the shape of canals like some nearby to this place. |
We had lunch in the National Park at Restuarante 7 Canadas and were really pleased to see these two Atlantic Canaries flitting about. |
Next stop was to see the Giants' Parade, a series of rocks that are remains of the Canadas Volcano that existed before Mount Tiede (or Papa Tiede as the locals call it). |
Jonathon decided to use his infra red camera for a dramatic black and white image of these rocks. |
We saw a few plants while we were travelling about but a lot of the flowers had lost their colour with it being the end of the summer. |
The clouds were gathering as we came back to the coast (via the almost inevitable Aloe Vera farm) so it was hard to see the neighbouring islands en route. |
By the time we got back to Adeje it was quite grey and threatening over the mountains (but still OK on the coast). We went for our daily fix of gelato then back for dinner so Jonathon could go sunset hunting with his camera. |
Wednesday and it was much cloudier today and not as warm. The clouds and the black sand made everything a bit monochrome, especially before the sun came up. |
I went to La Caleta for my morning walk and was surprised to see this digger moving sand around. Not sure what the purpose was but he was very busy doing it - still on when I was on my way back to the hotel. The clouds made the sunrise look very pretty. I walked round the coast road this morning for a change. The sea was less calm today and it sounded like the waves were crashing into the coast far more than they really were. |
I decided to have a quick visit to the nature reserve (I counted the steps up - 127 - and the same down). My aim is to visit it in more detail tomorrow, my last chance before we have to go home. It's a great place to see the sunrise but also interesting in itself. I took a different route home and came across a boat in the middle of a roundabout. I'm not sure of its history but it certainly added colour to an otherwise grey road. |
We had a "window" seat at breakfast so a lovely view over the hotel gardens. There's anoher Riu hotel next door so we had a good view of their garden as well. We spent a good few hours in and around the pool today. No need for a gym visit when I'd been swimming. it was very relaxing and a good way to recover from the exertions of yesterday. Our usual visit to Gelato Fortuna was followed by dinner and watching the sun go down. |
Thursday came along all too fast. Jonathon wanted to do some early morning photography so he came with me and I dropped him off en route while I went to the nature reserve for a good walk around.
The nature reserve is bleakly beautiful but there's a lot of plant life when you look. |
The only part of the pathway I wasn't sure about was the boardwalk and when I got to this bit I thought I should turn around and start my journey back to the hotel. Time was marching on anyway so it was as good a time as any. I met up with Jonathon who was on his way back as well. The sunrise wasn't spectacular but he found plenty of other things to photograph instead. |
The waves were definitely stronger today. |
Jonathon spotted this lovely Ruddy Turnstone on his travels - very pretty bird. I popped to the shop after breakfast. I've admired these "polo" trees every time I've walked past them so thought it was about time I took a photo of one of them. |
I went for a paddle on the way back from the shop. The "brown" sand is lovely to walk on - quite firm but soft on your feet. The black sand is another matter altogether - it's like fine, quite sharp grit and not at all nice for your feet. |
A quick trip to the gym sorted out the calorie burning for the day as did the walk to the ice cream parlour! There was no stracciatella on show but, as we have been regular customers, they had a look at the next lot of ice cream to come out of the main fridge and there was some in there so Jonathon was spoiled! Jonathon disappeared to look for the sunset after dinner. The live entertainment was pretty good this evening so we enjoyed listening to it from the comfort of our room. |
Friday and our last day here but we weren't being picked up until tea time so had plenty of time to enjoy the remainder of our holiday. I went for a shorter sunrise walk then popped to the gym. |
I came back via the beach. It was lovely and quiet at that time of day. The sunrise looked lovely in the hotel pool when I got back. |
We packed our bags and took advantage of our balcony and the lovely view as long as we could before we had to check out. |
Jonathon has been thinking of trying the local speciality - a barraquito and, with this being our last trip to Gelato Fortuna, today was the day. I think the alcohol was a bit stronger than he expected but he said it was very nice! |
I walked the "lower" way back to the hotel whilst Jonathon took the direct route. To get from one to the other, there is a zigzag path. One each turn there seems to be yet another cafe or restaurant. |
I enjoyed looking at lots of lovely flowers on the way back. There have been quite a few paragliders, parasailers etc. while we've been here - some noisier than others. |
The car collected us and so began our long journey home. The end of another lovely holiday. |
