Australia and Kuala Lumpur October / November 2013
2013 found us on our way back to Australia, this time via Kuala Lumpur. I arranged the trip with AusTravel. I had visited KL on an earlier stopover but this was Jonathon's first time. From there we went to Brisbane, Tasmania, Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road. Please click below to go to the relevant pages.

We flew with Malaysia Airlines on one of their new A380s. Very nice it was too albeit 3 hours late due to a problem with a fuel pump (better they find these things before we take off!).

We checked our bags straight through to Brisbane from Heathrow and, on arriving in Kuala Lumpur, took a taxi to Christine and Chris's lovely apartment.

As we were only there for 24 hours (well, 21 as it turned out), we decided to whizz round on the Hop On, Hop Off bus to get a feel for KL.

The next few photos were taken on the tour. They were through glass so not brilliant quality but it shows the contrasts through the city. We had to jump off before we got to the end so missed Chinatown and a shopping area.

No idea what this frieze was all about but it went the length of a building.

The museum, as can be seen from the picture on the right, was 50 years the year we were there. We didn't go in - something to do next time if we stay a bit longer.

Despite being a bit of a concrete jungle with a lot of high rise buildings, KL also has quite a few green areas.

We had a short photo stop here - you can see why - the palace looks beautiful.

There were a couple of horse guards who then came out of their posts for a walk around.

It was also a good opportunity to look back towards KL city centre and see the two icons - Petronas Twin Towers and the KL Tower. The KL Tower is also called Menara.

There are, obviously, taller single towers but, as far as I know, the Petronas Twin Towers are the tallest in the world.

You can see the CIMB Octopus on top of their building - there were a few of them around!

Some of the street furniture was quite imaginative.

Some of the buildings were newer than others!

The roads were quite busy in places - we were there on a Sunday.

... and then the rain started so a few of the photos will have added rain drops - helps you to appreciate the feel of KL.

... and then it rained a lot more so this was our view from the bus - thankfully, it wasn't open topped!

The rain stopped and as we were due to meet the others at 5.30 p.m. at KLCC (twin towers) we knew we wouldn't have time to go round again so we got off and walked back to the towers, cameras in hand.

What we didn't realise was thay we had got off the bus in the clubbing area. Very us, (I don't think).

The pavements were interesting at times.

We passed a nice chill out garden area on our short walk and the words on the right caught my eye.

The photo on the left is what Jonathon was taking when I snapped him above.

We made enquiries about walking across the Sky Bridge but we would need to book in advance so there was no chance on the one day we were there. Again, next time. Instead we took ourselves into the mall and had a mooch around. It's amazing what kind of shops you find.

Christine had reminded us to keep hydrated so we treated ourselves to a milk shake - delicious!

As you can see, the food court was rather busy (this photo is just a tiny part of it).

It was time to meet up with the others so, after a quick exchange of texts, Christine came to collect us and we set off for the Grand Hyatt for dinner. As this was on Floor 38, it gave us an opportunity to take some aerial photos.

As the light changed, in anticipation of a lightening storm, the sides of the towers were beautifully lit up.

Just before we left the Hyatt, I had one last scoot round with my camera to capture some of the lights.

The twin towers were a lot easier to photograph than the KL Tower, mainly due to the angle I could get. That said, it was lovely to see the twinkling lights of this one whilst we were enjoying dinner.

The Hyatt foyer on the ground floor was quite impressive but we had to go up to Floor 39 for the real lobby and then back to 38 for the restaurant. A strange set up but no hardship as the express lift took us straight up.

Finally a photo of the 6 of us (left to right - Chris, me, Christine, Jonathon, Mike and Jan).

It was lovely to call in and say Hello but we really need to stay longer next time. We were up early next morning, Christine dropped us at the station and we took the direct train to KLIA - next stop Brisbane.
